What is acupuncture?Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin, solid, hair-like needles through the skin at specific points. The stimulation of these acupuncture points affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It triggers the release of the body’s internal chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins, which have pain-relieving properties, and stimulates the body’s own energies to rebalance and promote healing.
How does acupuncture feel?Acupuncture needles are only a little thicker than a human hair and can barely be felt upon entering the skin. Each one comes individually prepackaged in a sterile wrapper and is disposed of after use, so there is no risk of infection. After insertion, you may feel a sensation of warmth, heaviness, or tingling, but there should be little or no pain. Most patients find acupuncture very relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment.
What should you expect on your first visit?Your first acupuncture visit will take approximately 90 minutes, and consists of a comprehensive intake and a channel examination, allowing us to customize the best treatment for your specific needs. The acupuncture treatment itself takes about 30-45 minutes. We also take the time to answer your questions, educate you on your role in the program, and prescribe herbs and nutritional supplements when necessary. All follow-up treatments take about 60 minutes. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and have had something to eat within 2 hours of your treatment.
How many visits will you need? The number of follow-up visits needed depends on the duration, severity, and nature of the complaint as well as the age and general health of the person seeking treatment. The patient has the right to expect that their major complaint will be addressed and treated as direct and timely a manner as is possible.
We also recommend a quarterly "tune-up" to keep your health vibrant and your qi flowing. Call today for an appointment: (206) 696-2478.
